Lets Learn Japanese

                LETS LEARN JAPANESE
                                                                               -Nia Dutta

Hi there!!^_^
This section will give you an overview on how to speak, write and read the Japanese language. This segment is added to help and aid those who would love to learn the language and are unable to join proffesional courses due to lack of time for proper class or other reasons, for those who would like to get a feel of the Language and would be motivated to join proper classes later on .

I would also try my level best in helping out those of you who’ve already been taking classes and are about to or will be taking the JLPT exams. However, before we begin, one needs to understand that the best way to learn is always to find a professional teacher who has attained a degree in the language and as a teacher. Since I have neither, I hope you understand that my knowledge is limited.^^”. You are always welcome to share your views, ask questions when in doubt and I will do my best to answer as fast as I can.>o<. With that, let us begin! ^o^

FACTS That you will need to know.
*The Japanese language is called “nihongo”in Japanese, where Nihon means Japan and “go” means language.:)

**The Japanese language has three scripts. Namely,

“Hiragana”

This script is used to write any words that has Japanese origins. Like, “tamago”(egg)

“Katakana”

This script is used to write any words that has foreign origins. Like, “Pasocon” (Personal Computer)

“Kanji”

This script is used to pictorially depict any word. The Japanese language has many same sounding words but different Kanji to explain the difference in meaning. Kanji might sound like a curse, but as you slowly learn to be at home with the language you will start to appriciate the benifits of having Kanji.

“Romaji” Is the term used when Japanese is written using the Roman/Latin script. I will be using Romaji along with the other three scripts, using each at appropriate places. If all goes well, you too will be able to read and undersand all four soon.:)

Unlike any tutorials on net, I want to teach you guys how to write and read along with how to speak. ^_^. After all, wouldn’t  you just love to be able to stare at those Japanese alphabets you see while watching anime and exclaim “HEY,I KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS!!!!” ? During my initial days of learning, everytime I could recogonize a Kanji, it used to give me a thrill! :D.  So while learning, let's learn it properly!

Pronunciation of alphabets.
The Japanese language has 46 basic alphabets, 25 modified alphabets and a few combined alphabets. This is true for both Hiragana and Katakana script. However, these are very easy to learn and remember. So, let us begin. ^o^

Basic alphabets.

A             i               u             e             o

Ka           ki            ku           ke           ko

Sa           shi          su           se           so

Ta           chi          tsu          te            to

Na          ni            nu           ne           no

Ha           hi            fu            he           ho

Ma          mi           mu         me         mo

Ya                           yu                           yo

Ra           ri             ru            re            ro

Wa                                                         wo

n.

Modified alphabets.

Ga           gi            gu           ge           go

Za           ji             zu           ze           zo

Da           ji             zu           de           do

Ba           bi            bu           be           bo

Pa           pi            pu           pe           po

The combined alphabets are made adding “ya, yu and yo” to the “ki, gi, shi, ji, chi, ji, ni, hi, bi, pi, mi and ri” alphabets.  This will look and feel easier after you’ve practiced a fair few times. Don’t be afraid and give it a try.:D

Combined alphabets.

Kya         kyu         ko

Gya        gyu         gyo

Sha         shu         sho

Jya          jyu          jyo

Chya      chyu      chyo

Jya          jyu          jyo

Nya        nyu        nyo

Hya        hyu        hyo

Bya         byu        byo

Pya         pyu        pyo

Mya       myu       myo

Rya         ryu         ryo

Here are the Japanese counterparts of the above, In both Hiragana and Katakana.

Now, you need to know that Japanese language has five vowels “a,i,u,e,o” and the remaining alphabets barring “n” are consonants that have been combined with the five vowels. “n” is a standalone consonant and sometimes its pronunciation changes to “m”. However, at all times, the written form remains “n”.

How to write

Today on how to write, we we learn how to correctly write the first five alphabets in the Hiragana script. The five vowels. Please note the stroke orders as it is important to follow the strokes at all times. Just press play to begin ^^.

That was easy enough wasn’t it?^_^

Some new words

Let us learn some words in Japanese.^__^. Later, I will also teach you how to form simple sentences using these words.

NOTE:- “ou” is to stress on the elongation of “o”.

Press the button to listen to the pronunciations.:)

VEGETABLES    yasai

FRUITS               kudamono

ANIMALS           doubutsu

PLANTS              shokubutsu.

BIRDS                 tori

YEAR                  toshi,nen

MONTH                       getsu,gatsu

DAY                              hi,bi,nichi

SUPERMARKET                   suppa

APARTMENT              apaato

I know at this point you are all thinking “boring words” but stocking up your vocabulary on these words will come in handy later on.^_^.

This is all for this tutorial. In the next one, We will be learning how to form simple sentences and Japanese greetings, so till then, practice hard, ne!^__^.

I hope you found this tutorial helpful, fun and easy to learn. I didn’t know how best to teach so I took a lot of references from how my sensei teaches in class. Many thanks to Ruma sensei.:3

Thankyou,
Nia Dutta.

Nihongo no Ryouku shiken, JLPT

Hello everyone,
This blog is to give out information to all those who aspire to or have been appearing for the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test).
The Language Proficiency test for the Japanese language is for anyone to take who has studied a bare minimum of 300 hours or more of the language. This test is for those who study the language to see their grasp of the language as is aparent from the name of the examination itself. For those who know me since I joined this site, know that I have made a blog post about last year's exam. For those who've never known me and are persuing this blog on mere whim, I hope you find this useful. This year, rather than continually whining about how I found the revision days leading up to the exam torturous, I decided to give you some information and general idea about the exam itself. For those of you who wish to hear my whines, I give you the link of my previous year's blog.xD.
http://community.animax-asia.com/profiles/blogs/nisenkunen-nihongo-...
Right, to buisness. As I've already mentioned last year, the JLPT exam patterns have changed as of 2010. From 2010, it was deemed, that instead of holding a yearly exam, now the exams will be held half yearly.i.e, JLPt will happen twice every year.

Timings alloted during exams
The Levels of difficulty for the exams have also changed. Whence, uptil last year, there were only four levels or "dans" yonkyuu, san kyuu, nikkyu and ikkyu,
starting this year, the levels will be as follows:
N5, N4, N3, N2 and N1.
N5 for begginers.
N4 as equivalent of a more difficult version of Sankyuu.
N3 as equvalent of sankyuu and nikkyu mixed
N2 as equivalent of nikkyu and ikkyu.
N1 as more difficult than previous years.

Exam's general informations

The JLPT exams have three segments in all. first is " Moji/koi" or " Reading/Grammer" the second paper is " Doukai/bunpou" or " Vocabulary/ written" and the third is " Choukai" or "Audio". Each paper has its own uniqueness and dificulty. I've herd many students complain that Choukai is the most difficult of all papers, and it is the absolute truth. However, it is also important to know that the two remaining written part is not a piece of cake either. The timing given is very short so be quick, however,

dont do this either.:P
Tips
Vocabulary is the key. If your vocabulary part is flawless, you will not have problems in any of the exam parts. Read up all the new words you can find. And pay special attention to the Kanjis.:).
Keep in mind that the time given are extreemly short so you have to practice timings too.solve previous year's questions prior to attempting the tests.Even if the exam patterns have changed, the practices will give you lots to learn about.:)

Exam study materials for interested people

Before I give you these links, I want it understood that even though there are slots for people who self study to give this exams, but it'd be wiser to learn the language at the hands of a teacher, atleast in the begining before you attempt these exams.:)

http://www.mlcjapanese.co.jp/Download.htm

you will get a lot of study material of old patterns and chokkai guides from Mlc.:)
http://www.tanos.co.uk/jlpt/aboutjlpt/

this page will give you useful information about the new JLPT patterns.

FOR STUDENTS WANTING TO APPEAR FOR THIS EXAMS (HOW TO GET FORMS AND WHAT YOU WILL NEED)
Any aspiring students of the language examinations can collect the exam forms from the state "Japan consul" or "Japanese embassy" if you're from Delhi. If you're from Kolkata as me, then you can find your forms from the Japan consul general office in Ballygaunge. Or you can request it from your teaches aswell.:) This year's exam fees have been raised to 500/-
you will recieve a booklet like this. This will also contain the form.
for form fillups, you'll aslo need two copies of your pasport size photos. You have to submmit the forms in the same place. You recieve your admit card with exam center informations a monthbefore the exams. The Kolkata exam is always held in Calcutta university.
In march, you get to know whether you've passed or failed. If you fail, you recieve a small brown envelope only with the score card in it. If you Pass, you recieve a larger envelope with a pass card, the score card, and you recieve a personal letter from th consul general congratulating you on your hard work.:)Like this:

These things are important proofs for later life when you look for job which also requires you to know the language. You need to pass atleast level N2 to apply for job that requires a japanese language background.
This year's exam is on 5th of december 2010, starting from 9:00 am.

I'm appearing for N4 this year.>n<.....I'm not sure how it'll go since I'm the first candidate to be appearing under the new patterns. Will let you know tomorrow!
Hope this blog was useful,

The India Japan students conference 2009 and 2010

Sunday, May 29, 2011

n, The India Japan students conference

2009 celebrated the thirteenth India japan students' conference.I was fortunate enought to be a part of this prestigious event and be the President and students' representative of the Kolkata session which started from 17th August and continued till 23rd of August. In the one week,we all got to know of our country better. The japanese team were very cooperative and jolly which aided in the smooth running of the conference and they were so very ernest in undrestanding Indian culture,it was heartwarming to know.I met two students their who were into manga, anime and gaming and we spent most of our free discussion times discussing about anime!!!It was all verymuch fun...
However, contrary to my conception that every one in japan follow anime,I was proven wrong after meeting them since most of the were tokyo students and didnt know about "Getbackers" which was based on shinjuku!!!moreover they didnot seem very interested in the topic.^_^.it just goes to show that just cuz Bollywood is in India doesnt mean every Indian know what the latest hit in the boxoffice is.xD....
The sevendays and the prior three months in arranging the event had been some of my best moments in life.I made many good friends. And I had such a wonderful and supporting team that the whole thing turned out to be most enjoyable.^____^
